Butrus Said started out life as a nobody, just another brick in the wall. He was born in Beit Sahour, a suburb in Bethlehem, Palestine. But Butrus Said was always made for greater things. In 2002, Butrus Said came to Germany, for higher education. At the time, he had only one suitcase which held all of his belongings and 117 euros in his pocket. Resistance to the path to success came in the form of his degree from Palestine not being valid in Germany and Butrus Said had to spend many more years than necessary. In the meantime, while pursuing his degree in business informatics from Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, Butrus Said took up the side hustle of hand-carving wooden toys and decorations and sold them at the weekly market.
Butrus Said’s life took a turn in mid-2004 when he discovered eBay. The popular E-Commerce platform provides a space for all sorts of buyers and sellers and is the first choice of many from all over the world. From the first glance, Butrus Said knew that eBay held a potential that would solve all of his problems and he was right. By the end of 2004, Butrus Said had made up his mind and could now focus on both his studies as well as his work without having to compromise on either.
The struggle was not over yet, and Butrus Said had to partner up with fellow classmate August Krol to officially license his business. Once that matter was settled though, the business grew quickly. Customer satisfaction, merchandise management and logistics teams were added and annual turnover grew above 20 million euros. However, with all this success and so much going on, it’s easy to make a mistake and unfortunately for Butrus Said, it came in the form of a fatal one. With no more capital funds, the company soon turned into nothingness.
However, this dedicated businessman never thought of giving up and instead, drew up a business model which was both more compact and much more efficient. Within 18 months, Butrus Said was able to forgo all operations overviews and only lead the company from a strategic viewpoint. Today, the company is flourishing and has made cumulative sales of 91 million euros, with 4.5 million orders fulfilled on Amazon itself.
